NOTICE: The Forest Service now charges visitors for parking, even on weekdays. Because of this, and because of my deteriorating health, I do not visit Angeles National Forest any more, so this site will probably not be updated. It's easy to think that all of Los Angeles County is a mass of streets and buildings. Most books about our national treasures don't mention national forests, period. Look at a guidebook of L.A.'s favorite tourist spots and you won't find much wild land. Actually, large chunks of L.A. County are still wild: the Mojave Desert and Angeles National Forest. Angeles National Forest takes up one-fourth of the area of L.A. County. Most of it isn't forest, but coastal sage scrub and chaparral. There are several ways in, but from the basin the best way is via Angeles Crest Highway, from the 210 Freeway or (from Orange County) the 15. |
